Hands up if…

We’ve all done it. A solid front nine sees us make the turn one or two under our handicap, and we carry on playing the same over the next few holes. All of a sudden we only have a few holes left to play and think to ourselves: ‘I’ve been going along quite nicely, I wonder what score I’m on.’ A quick glance down at the scorecard reveals we’re on for a great round and nice little handicap cut; we might even win the monthly medal! Ten minutes later and we’ve three-putted the next green, lost a couple of balls and left one in the bunker.

Luckily for us, it’s not just us mere mortals who suffer this kind of feat. Stand up, Dustin Johnson – the current world number one. The American was six shots clear of the field with 18 holes left to play at the weekend’s WGC-HSBC Champions Event, only to shoot five-over on Sunday and lose by two shots to eventual winner Justin Rose.

Thursday 19th October

The 18 hole competition was cancelled due to bad weather, however the 9 hole yellow tee stableford competition went ahead. Well done to Paul Marsh with a great score of 37 points, which reduced his handicap to 9.4. The runner up was Tony Collinge with 35 points.

Saturday 21st October

This week’s competition was the Individual Bogey. Considering the high winds and rain 128 members still took to the course producing some great scores. Division one winner was James Edwards pipping Ian Pethybridge both scoring scores of +2. In Third Place continuing his good form, was Paul McFerran with a score of 0.

The Division Two winner with a good score of +2 was Ken Waters. Runner up was Terry Taylor with a score of 0 and following up in third was Dave McCabe also with a score of 0. Well done to all the players who fought the stormy conditions and congratulations to the winners.

The Ladies Stableford competition was won by Georgina Hales with a score of 30 points. Runner up was Edwina Greenwood with a score of 27 points.

Tuesday 24th October

The Ladies Competition was the Autumn Meeting, which was the best TWO scores to count from three players. The winners were Alison Donaldson, Ann Taylor & Pat Peters with a fantastic score of 72. Runners up were Fiona Davies, Jill Evans & Wendy Grimshaw with a good score of 69. Third place were Rhona Banks, Sue Greenhalgh & Anne Greenhough with a score of 67.

Thursday 26th October

After last week’s Thursday 18 hole competition was cancelled, members were chomping at the bit to get out on the course and reduce their handicaps before the season came to a close.

This week’s competition was a Yellow tee Stableford where 64 players were fighting for the top spot. The winner was Ray Stringer with a great score of 41 points which reduced his handicap by 1.2 shots to 12.9. Runner up was Tony Osborne also with 41 points, which reduced his handicap to 4.4. Third place was Keith Workman with a good score of 40 points reducing his handicap to 10.9.

The 9 Hole Yellow tee Stableford was won by Doug Burke producing a great score of 38 points reducing his handicap 0.8 to 23.2. In Second place was Tony Marsden with a score of 33 points. Third place was Stuart Tranter with score of 31 points.

Saturday 28th October

This week’s competition was the Remembrance Trophy with a great turnout of 154 players.

Congratulations to Tony Osborne who shot a fantastic Gross score of 72, Nett 68 reducing his handicap to 4.0. Runner up was John Hopkins with a Gross 81, Nett 69 reducing his handicap to 11.1. Third place was John Arber with a Gross score of 75, Nett 70 reducing his handicap to 5.2.

This was the final qualifying competition of the year and the pro shop team would like to say a well done to all the winners over the season and everyone who has participated.

Tuesday 31st October

This week’s Ladies competition was a 16 hole Stableford, with a great turnout of 33 players. The winner was Shirley Warner with a score of 30 points pipping Liz Hatton who also scored 30 points. Third place was Jo Carter with a score of 29 points closely followed by Sarah Loy in fourth with the same points.
