Greetings from Reay Mackay
Warrington Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Tuesday 22nd July

54 ladies competed in the Ladies 4th Club this week with the format being a Bogey competition. The winner of Division 1 was Ann Taylor who had a great score of 4 Up. Runner up was Yvonne Potter with a score of 3 Up. The winner of Division 2 was Rhona Banks who also managed a good score of 4 Up. Runner up was Sue Murphy who had a score of 2 Up. Division 3 winner was Val Floyd who also had 4 Up. Runner up was Barbara Young with a score of 1 Up. The winner of the 9 hole competition was Judy Hughes with a score of 14 Stableford Points.

Thursday 24th July

89 players turned out in this week's Thursday Roll Up with the format being a Yellow tee Stableford. The winner was a new member Mark Hunter who had a good score of 41 Points and as a result reduced his handicap down to 10.7. Runner up went to Andy Prince who managed 40 Points. Third place went to Reg Dumbill who also had 40 Points but missed out on 2nd place on a card playoff. Fourth & fifth place were decided by a card playoff as three players all had 39 Points. Fourth place went to went to Paul Hockenhull. Fifth place went to Roy Delooze who did enough on the back nine to beat Graham Scholes into the prizes.

Saturday 26th July

This Saturday's competition was the board competition, the Roberts Bowl. 187 players competed on what was another glorious day with wall-to-wall sunshine. There were lots of fantastic scores but the eventual winner was Chris Peake who had an amazing score of 74 - 10 = 64 Nett. This surprisingly was only just enough on a card playoff and meant that Chris reduced his handicap significantly down to 8.2. Congratulations go to Chris. A very close runner up was Alan Carr who rolled back the years and also managed a fantastic score of 64 Nett. Third place went to a man in serious form, John Peters, who only last week won the Thursday Strokeplay competition, who had a great score of 65 Nett. John as a result received an exceptional scoring reduction and has dropped from 12 down to 7 in the space of 10 days! Fourth place went to Martin Jenkins who managed a 66 Nett as an early morning starter. The player with the Lowest Gross score was Mark Austin who shot a 68 Gross off his +1 handicap. A special mention to Harry Blower as he also received an exceptional scoring reduction following his 67 Nett and in the space of a few weeks he has reduced his handicap from 14 to 11. This reduction follows Harry putting in to play the new Callaway X2 Hot Driver, flowing a driver fitting with us, which has improved his driving significantly.

North Cheshire League Update

As some of you may know, the club here at Warrington have a team of 12 players that compete in the North Cheshire League on Tuesday evening throughout May, June & July. There are two separate leagues, with four teams in each league and teams play each other home and away and the winner and runner up progress through to the semi-final. I felt that I wanted to give you an update on our progress so far.

The first game was away at Birchwood Golf Club, which traditionally is a difficult place to get a result at, and the team did exceptionally well to grind out a 3-3 draw. The second game was also away at High Legh. Once again, the team did very well to manage to get a 3-3 draw result. A good start to the season!

The third game, after a week's break, was at home against Ashton-on-Mersey. Several games were very close but we managed to take a 4-2 win which was extremely important to keep the momentum going into the final three matches.

Another week's break, and another home game, against Birchwood. This time a convincing 5-1 victory started to mean we were looking in a good position to qualify for the semi-finals. However, if you finished runner up in the group then that meant that you would be playing away against the winners from the other league, so it was important to ensure that we won the league so that we would be playing at home in the semi-final.

The fifth game was again at home against High Legh. We managed to sneak out another 4-2 victory which meant that we were virtually guaranteed to win the league as long as we got several points in our last match away at Ashton-on-Mersey.

The sixth and final league game was away at Ashton-on-Mersey who had been struggling slightly so we went there with high confidence and performed brilliantly to take a 3.5-1.5 victory and along with it the league winners title.

This meant that we were at home for the semi-final the following week against Antrobus Golf Club who finished runners up in their league. We had to win outright as a draw would have sent Antrobus through as the away team. The matches were all close for the majority of the holes but in the end the home advantage paid off as we won 5-1.

I just wanted to say a big thanks to all of those that have played so far. I wanted to mention several of those that have performed outstandingly. Bryan Worrall & Steve Fathers both played together at every game and were unbeaten - a great record as they won six and halved one out of the seven games played. Ben Spanton was unbeaten in his six matches with his two partners of Chris Webster for two games & John Hill for four as they won 5 and halved one other. Julian Hurst & Adam Mannion both played every game and won four matches, halved one and lost two so again a great record. Juniors David Alcock & Dan Young also both played every game and only lost once and won the six other matches.

The final is being played at Davyhulme Park Golf Club on Sunday 7th September against Davyhulme as they managed to win their league and semi-final. Let's hope we can put in a good performance and bring back the trophy. I will update you with the result as soon as I can after the final.

Many thanks,

Iain Wright, Team Captain
